For many inhabitants of the Great Newel, life can be hard. This is especially true for those living on the bottom rung of the Newel, the Rust Floor. And unlike the elites sitting at the top, Kateryna spends everyday trying to survive this cruel space station. That, or considering throwing herself from the edge down to a planet that's been dead for centuries. On the day of her 29th birthday, Kat again stands at the edge, staring down at the hunk of dead rock below. Before she can throw herself off, she is interrupted by the intercom announcement of the next Ascencion Ritual, a decennial event meant to send one lucky person straight to the top of the Great Newel.
