In 2048, humanity begins changing. Without warning, people across the world are seized by a biological event known as the Metamorphosis. Some emerge with bodies adapted for impossible environments. Others develop organs, instincts, and abilities that no known evolutionary process should be capable of producing. Many do not survive. No one knows what determines each transformation, why certain people are chosen, or whether the changes represent humanity’s future or the beginning of its extinction. Dr. Neferet “Nef” Montero, a twenty-seven-year-old Egyptian-Spanish evolutionary geneticist, has spent her life studying how living organisms adapt under pressure. Attached to Barcelona’s Helix Institute, she believes every mutation has a cause and every biological system follows a pattern. The Metamorphosis destroys that certainty. Its victims are not adapting to the world as it exists. Their bodies appear to be preparing for environments, threats, and futures that have not happened yet. When Nef undergoes a rare transformation that refuses to stabilize, she becomes both researcher and specimen. Her DNA continues rewriting itself in response to danger, producing new traits before she consciously understands why she needs them. Every adaptation allows her to survive, but each one carries a physical cost and pulls her further from the body and identity she once considered her own. The Helix Institute wants to study her. Governments want to control her. The Darwin Initiative, a powerful movement that believes the Metamorphosis is humanity’s intended next stage, wants to force the rest of the world to evolve with her. As Barcelona becomes a battleground between frightened civilians, unstable transformed humans, corporate researchers, and evolutionary extremists, Nef joins Nali, Dale, Sofia, and Rafael in investigating outbreaks and protecting those whose bodies have turned against them. Each case reveals another part of the same disturbing pattern: the Metamorphosis is not random, the changes are accelerating, and something buried deep within humanity’s genetic history may be guiding them. Nef must decide whether evolution is a destiny written into the body or a force that can still be shaped by human choice. To stop the Darwin Initiative, she will have to use the very transformation she fears, knowing that survival may require her to become something no longer entirely human. But the battle for Barcelona is only the first molt. Long before the modern Metamorphosis began, another being completed the process—and beneath the earth, it has started to wake.
