Rain Falls on a Dry Tree

Rain Falls on a Dry Tree

by EternalFlower

DramaPsychological

Detective Kang Do-hyun lives by numbers. Wake at 6:04. Shave. Coffee, black. Badge. Door. He processes the world in data points — height estimates, timestamp gaps, CCTV angles — and has long since stopped asking whether anything exists between them. His marriage to Hyun-ju is not broken. It was never alive enough to break. When a young woman named Ji-eun disappears, the case brings a witness into Do-hyun's orbit: Yoon Seo-a, Ji-eun's longtime friend and last known contact. Seo-a is strange in ways Do-hyun's reports cannot classify. She trembles at the right moments. She says the right things. And after every encounter, she keeps what she should wash away — the scent on a knit sweater, the warmth where a hand briefly touched, the residue of proximity. She calls it comfort. The reader will call it something else. At home, Hyun-ju waits without knowing she is waiting. A woman who built her identity around cleanliness — bleached counters, folded shirts, a perfectly timed routine — she has begun to notice things her hands detect before her mind allows: a change in the way her husband's towel hangs, a silence where the television used to murmur, a warmth beneath her own collarbone she did not invite. She scrubs these observations away as quickly as they surface. But the cost of scrubbing is rising. Three people. Three rooms. The same night. Seo-a reaches out in the dark, staining herself with traces of a man who will never reach back. Do-hyun edits his own memory, deleting the hours he cannot file under "case-related." Hyun-ju grips a glass of water too hard and cannot explain why. No one in this story is innocent. Do-hyun's emotional void is not neutrality — it is slow, passive destruction. Seo-a's obsession is not love — it is a survival mechanism built on someone else's bones. Hyun-ju's cleanliness is not virtue — it is a dam, and the cracks have already begun. Rain Falls on a Dead Tree is the story of what happens when two women pour themselves into a man who cannot hold water. One leaves stains. The other scrubs until her skin is raw. And the dead tree stands in the middle, wondering why it feels damp. The rain will not save it. The rain was never meant to.
