Along the way: a reluctant reputation he never asked for, a rival Forerunner determined to catch him, a faction that names itself after his own worst night, and a stranger at the edge of the block who tells him, calmly, that the answers to what he actually is exist — and are considerably larger than the street he's standing on. Kai doesn't know yet that a god has already marked his name as worth watching. He doesn't know that "Water" is only the first word of something much older. He only knows that his sister is safe, that the sword feels less like a memory of his grandfather every day and more like a promise, and that whatever the Ladder has planned for him next, he isn't backing down from it.
