THE WEIGHT OF THE TIDEBook One: Integration Sixteen-year-old Kai Donovan has spent four years learning to hold a katana the way his grandfather taught him — patient, precise, correcting one inch of stance at a time. He never expected to need it for anything more than Tuesday-and-Thursday practice. Then the System arrives without warning, and Earth stops being a planet with governments and starts being a rung on a ladder that ends, a thousand levels up, in godhood. Buildings collapse overnight. Countries dissolve into a patchwork of Rift-claimed fiefs overnight ruled by ordinary people suddenly wearing titles like Baron. And in the space of one violet-lit night, Kai is handed a Class the System itself calls unfit for combat: Tidecaller. Water. Common. Weak. He doesn't have the luxury of arguing with the label. A creature the size of a delivery truck is standing between him and his thirteen-year-old sister, Mia, and all he has is his grandfather's sword — and the stubborn, half-remembered lesson that water doesn't need to be gentle. It just needs enough behind it. What follows is the story of a boy who takes the "weakest" element on the Ladder and turns it into something the rest of the world hasn't got a name for yet — a needle-thin thread of water that cuts through diamond-hard shell, a stubborn refusal to accept what he's been told he can't do, and a leaderboard rank he claims on his first night and never lets go of. Along the way: a reluctant reputation he never asked for, a rival Forerunner determined to catch him, a faction that names itself after his own worst night, and a stranger at the edge of the block who tells him, calmly, that the answers to what he actually is exist — and are considerably larger than the street he's standing on. Kai doesn't know yet that a god has already marked his name as worth watching. He doesn't know that "Water" is only the first word of something much older. He only knows that his sister is safe, that the sword feels less like a memory of his grandfather every day and more like a promise, and that whatever the Ladder has planned for him next, he isn't backing down from it.
