Sam grows up in Iron Creek, a remote mining town in the Australian Outback. His father is slowly losing his health after years of working in the mines. His mother was born into one of the region's wealthiest mining families, but after marrying the son of a Chinese miner, she was disowned by her father. The only thing she received was an old house on the outskirts of town. As a child, Sam has only one simple dream—to make sure his mother never cries again. As he grows older, that small wish evolves into something much bigger: creating opportunities, building prosperity that others can share, and making the world just a little better. Everything changes on the night of his high school graduation. Near a giant iron meteorite known locally as Bell Rock, Sam discovers a lost white puppy named Sean. Hidden inside Sean is an alien consciousness called X, stranded on Earth after missing an interstellar transport eighteen years earlier. X offers Sam an extraordinary bargain: once each year, Sam may change one event in his life—but every miracle costs him one year of his own lifespan. At first, Sam refuses. But after witnessing his mother silently hide a check sent by the grandfather who abandoned her years ago, he begins to question whether fate should always be accepted. For his first choice, Sam doesn't ask for wealth or success. Instead, he uses his chance to heal his family, helping his grandfather finally set aside his pride and reconcile with the daughter he lost eighteen years earlier. As Sam continues to trade years of his life for opportunities to change the future, he discovers that every decision creates unexpected consequences—and that the greatest challenge is not changing destiny, but deciding whose destiny is worth changing. The Southern Cross Ledger is a heartwarming and thought-provoking novel about family, sacrifice, second chances, and the true meaning of success.
