Everyone bonds with a Kithren at seventeen. Everyone except Ant. Five years later, he's still unkithered — homeless, forgotten, and carrying a clan name that used to mean something. Then something chooses him. Not a common Kithren. Something ancient. Something that shouldn't exist. It calls him master.  It gives him an ancient system. It doesn't care what he's become. It recognises what he comes from. Ant doesn't ask why. He's just relieved something finally wanted him at all. He has no idea what he's been given. Neither does anyone else.
