In a system far from the birthplace of humanity, the war between the Brotherhood and the Far Light rages on. Twenty genetically engineered super-soldiers are on their way to their first military assignment when their transport shuttle is attacked. THREE, one of the super-soldiers, survives due to a faulty lock on her cryopod. She organizes a counterstrike on the terrorist attack, flushing the enemies from the ship, but not before discovering an artifact from Ophelia's War known as a mind engine. Alone and without her brothers-in-arms, Three, now dubbed the Red Star, is thrust into the political games of the resident Warmaster. WARMASTER AUREL schemes to use Three to his advantage. He assigns her as the pilot of the mind engine, known as E-17. Together, the Red Star and the mind engine search for the Far Light's secret weapon at Aurel's command. They are sent to the desert planet Gaia in search of the weapon where they reclaim Onyx Research Station. When Three's nightmares surface, E-17 and Three speak about dreams. E-17 reveals her dream: to have a name beyond the clinical mind engine's designation. Three realizes that she and E-17 have become more than allies. They have become friends. The two decide to give themselves names: Nye and Eurydice. In the course of chasing the Far Light's supposed secret weapon, Nye and Eurydice are given access to Project Ash. They discover the project is a space craft capable of rendering entire planets uninhabitable. With this new information, Nye's nightmares and visions become impossible to ignore. Together, Nye and Eurydice work to uncover Nye's lost memories and recover her past. They discover a Far Light operative known simply as the WOLF. With the help of the Wolf, Nye restores her memories. She realizes she was kidnapped from her home planet as a child and had her memories wiped to become the perfect subject for the Red Star super-soldier program. After uncovering her memories, Nye and Eurydice decide they must escape the Brotherhood. During their escape, however, they are captured. Eurydice has just enough time to reveal her love for Nye before her housing unit is destroyed. Haunted by what she believes is the ghost of Eurydice, Nye and a mysterious voice in her head that sounds like her beloved work together to help Nye escape the Brotherhood. Nye is injured during her escape but manages to make it off of the Brotherhood planet alive. She and Eurydice escape to a desolate wasteland known as the Dead Frontier. While in the Dead Frontier, Nye receives a communication from none other than her dead twin sister Quinn who survived the massacre of their family and planet. She is alive and searching for Nye.
