Ash

Some kids the world catches before they fall. Nobody was ever waiting under Ash. His father was an absence shaped like a man. His mother loved him in the spaces between needing something more. By eleven he'd stopped keeping anything he couldn't carry — by sixteen, he'd done a thing in an abandoned house that the world simply let him walk away from. That was when he learned the worst punishment isn't a cell. It's that the sun keeps coming up like it doesn't know, and you have to keep being the person who did it. Moved to a soft suburb that smells like cut grass and dryer sheets, Ash becomes the only rough thing in a town that has sanded everything else smooth. He envies the unmarked kids their easy lives — and finds, against every instinct, two people who reach for him anyway: Theo, smothered by a family that loves him flat, and Dom, a brother in everything but blood who learned to pass when Ash never could. The slum was never the place Ash couldn't leave. It was the language he'd think in for the rest of his life. Handed the warm country again and again — a lease, a second chance, a girl who saw him as a person instead of a splinter — he keeps reaching past all of it for the one fluency that ever made him feel like somebody. A spare, unflinching story about violence and tenderness, about the families that catch you and the ones that don't, and about whether a boy raised in the cold can ever learn another word for home.
