Every year, the gods speak. Their words appear within a sacred book carried by the Omen Holder, and the people of the Vireth Communion obey without question. The omens have guided the city for generations. They have predicted harvests, disasters, and the rise of kings. They have never been wrong. Then, for the first time in twenty-one years, the Book names a person. Sable the Lightless must die tonight. Sable is a starving girl from the lowest district. She has no family, no status, and no idea why an entire city suddenly wants her dead. As bells ring across the capital, streets are sealed, doors are barred, and masked riders flood the night in search of her.
