In a modern Japan where most of humanity is unaware of what lurks beneath reality, unexplained phenomena are quietly categorized as Yokai—entities born from distortions in perception, memory, and emotional residue. When a Yokai is destroyed, it leaves behind residual energy that can be harvested into specialized spiritual weapons, though only a small faction of trained investigators are aware of this system. Rina Kisaragi is a quiet, observant high school student on the verge of graduation. She documents everything—people, conversations, moments—almost compulsively, as if afraid of losing them. Her closest friends, Kaito, Yuna, and Daichi, convince her to spend what remains of their youth exploring an abandoned structure rumored to be linked to local disappearances. What begins as a harmless excursion quickly turns into a descent into something impossible. Inside the building, time and space begin to fracture. Hallways repeat. Sound behaves incorrectly. Personal devices distort reality. And something inside the structure begins studying them—an emerging Yokai later identified as Mugen, a class of entity that does not immediately attack, but instead imitates, observes, and attempts to understand human connection by breaking it apart. One by one, the group is separated. Only Rina escapes. But escape is not survival in any meaningful sense. The outside world refuses to acknowledge what happened. Authorities classify it as an accident, while media reports vague disappearances near abandoned structures. Rina returns alone to a world where her friends are gone, and the final week of her normal life becomes something she can no longer step back into. As grief sets in, she is approached by a covert organization known as the Threshold Bureau, an investigative force responsible for monitoring and eliminating Yokai phenomena. Led by field agents Light Arakawa and his partner Aoi, the Bureau recognizes that Rina’s survival is not normal—it is a data point tied directly to a Class B anomaly. Offered no clear comfort and no closure, Rina is pulled into the Bureau not as a soldier, but as a witness who refuses to be dismissed. But Mugen is still out there. And it is not finished learning.
