A knife remembers cutting. A chain remembers restraint. A funeral bell remembers grief. Those who can absorb an object’s Quintessence into their Mortar and release it as Pith rule the world through weapons, relics, heirlooms, and ancient tools soaked in history. Despite all of this, Kraden Mirias has nothing. His Mortar was tested and declared empty. No clan would take him. No school would teach him. No master would waste a single berry on his training. After being accused of stealing a sealed heirloom, he is dragged to the execution terrace to die beneath a bell that has watched thousands of criminals lose their heads. But empty does not always mean weak. When the executioner’s blade falls, Kraden discovers a forbidden truth: some Mortars preserve the space left behind after everything has already been taken. Now clans, temples, prisons, armies, and relic-hoarding nobles will hunt him for the secret inside his hollow body. To survive, Kraden must learn the hidden side of Pithcraft, consume the histories of the world’s most dangerous objects, and turn every battlefield into a trap made from memory. A knife can cut. A crown can command. A grave can remember. But an empty Mortar can swallow them all.
