Before I knew I existed

Before Adrian was born, his life had already been shaped by decisions that weren't his—a wedding nobody quite smiled at, a grandmother who tried to ensure he never existed, and a river that already carried secrets that would take decades to surface. This is a memoir about growing up between walls that absorbed every argument and forgot nothing — about learning, as a child, to read the temperature of a room before stepping into it, to disappear quietly when disappearing was the safest option. It follows Adrian from a cramped apartment in a Romanian city on the Danube to a university campus in Bristol, England, where he begins to discover who he is outside the role he'd been assigned at home—the family's anchor, its quiet mediator, the one who held things together. It follows him through first love, first heartbreak, and the people who taught him — sometimes gently, sometimes by accident — what it means to be seen. It follows him through the worst night of his life and through the slow, unglamorous work of rebuilding afterward: a kind landlady with a garden and two dogs, a solicitor who understood more than he let on, and a family that didn't always get it right but never stopped showing up. And it follows him home—to a river that's always been there, indifferent and faithful at once, and to the people who shaped him, for better and for worse, into who he is now. This is a story about silence and the cost of keeping it. About queerness, family, trauma, and the particular kind of courage it takes to finally stop watching your own life from behind glass—and step into the room.
