Sable Vey is a state library archivist and furtively prolific cartographer. She is 26 years old, self-made, and is more interested in the art of mapmaking than sidequesting. One evening, at the close of her shift, she pulls an unusual folder from the cartography section: a collection of maps unlike anything in any catalogue -- an atlas of anomalies, if you will. The whole thing is unearthly, consisting of styles that are inconsistent across centuries, cultures, and possibly realms. And one map, the one on top that looks closest to something she could have drawn herself, is unfinished. She takes it home and finishes it. She then wakes up falling, though not by herself. Now, the story follows the group's struggle to survive, navigate, and eventually understand worlds that have their own history, their own wounds, and their own relationship to the atlas Sable carries, for the atlas already has a map of this place, and possesses maps of many more.
