Aron is seventeen the morning he carries his grandfather out the door for the last time. The old man was a writer — Roma, half-legend, the kind they said could see between worlds. He leaves Aron a chest: a compass whose needle points past north, a pen, and a pistol. He leaves him a single instruction, and a mountain in the far North that lived in every story he ever told.So Aron goes. Behind him, his city burns — not with hope, with fire. Beside him, a small girl the world has already taken everything from. Ahead, an ocean that turns to ice, a beast beneath the water, and a cold that erases. And on a high rock, through an old pair of binoculars he pried from a dead man’s hands, Aron looks south — toward a city that no longer exists — and finds it still breathing. On a narrow lane, a boy turns and meets his eyes. One green. One blue. His own.A story about a grandfather and a grandson, about a journey north, and about the slow, terrible suspicion that the world is being written by someone who is starting to forget it.If the writer forgets, the world breaks.Slow-burn literary fantasy. For readers of Frieren, Made in Abyss, and Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant. Passive protagonist, dense prose, rewards re-reading. Not a progression fantasy.
