In the kingdom of Ardenveil, no one chooses who they become. Once a year, every seventeen-year-old walks past the Conclave's gilded lectern for the Rite of Ascription, and the Canon — the holy Record that writes the world — tells them their role. Apprentice Smith. Field Cleric. Small lives, politely applauded. Aldric Voss draws Condemned Heretic. Realm: Ember Wick. Expected Narrative Outcome: Cleansing at the Pyre of Final Reckoning. Estimated year of resolution: eight. He is the bastard villain whose entire purpose is to be sneered at, humiliated, and burned in the cathedral square by a golden-haired Radiant Paladin — so the hero can weep prettily in the firelight and the kingdom can be cleansed. The room doesn't even gasp. There's a schedule. The line keeps moving. That night, a fever takes him, and a dead man's life pours back into the boy's body — thirty-one years lived on another world, where Aldric read fantasy novels on his library night shifts. Including one. The Illumined Record. This world's story. He knows every chapter, every beat, every name. He knows exactly how, and when, and by whose hand he dies. So he makes a decision in the dark: I am going to devour every page they wrote for me. Armed only with foreknowledge, a locked Creed Window, and a Canon that punishes anyone who deviates from their assigned role, Aldric sets out to rewrite a verdict the entire world considers already settled — turning his scripted humiliations into stepping stones, his executioner into an unknown, and his own damnation into the one story the Record never planned for. The world wrote him to fall. He's read the ending. And he intends to break the book.
