There is a suburb in Toronto where the light falls correctly, the gardens grow without effort, and nothing goes wrong in the small ways things usually go wrong. People who visit feel vaguely certain that things will work out. They cannot explain why. They do not try. Mira and Avan have lived there for two years. She is a nurse. He manages a warehouse. They volunteer for creature cleanups on Tuesday mornings, grow tomatoes the neighbours quietly envy, and come home to a house that has never once made a sound it wasn't supposed to make. Something happened during a creature event. Something small. A contact they were told was incidental, a form they signed without reading, a Tuesday that looked exactly like every other Tuesday until it didn't. The world they live in has a word for people like them now. It has forms, franchises, and a league that owns the laws that govern both. It has a very old man at the top of the whole structure who has been running it longer than anyone knows. The questions Mira and Avan are beginning to ask are not new questions. They are the oldest ones. They just don't know that yet.
