The Cosmic Ledger

The system governing the world is absolute, driven by a single, unyielding mathematical law: any miracle, any curse, or any advantage requires a payment of equal subjective value. Because of this law, the social hierarchy is terrifyingly rigid. The high-born navigate their pristine Upper Terrace towers with a freezing, calculated politeness. In this world, raising your voice or throwing a vulgar insult is a lethal mistake; it gives a desperate person the legal right to trade their own remaining lifespan to collapse your lungs or burst your ribcage right on the floor. To stay safe, the elite speak like saints while maintaining their dominance by sacrificing vast land deeds, corporate assets, and generational wealth to the System. At the bottom of the Spire, sixty floors below the clean air, the rules are much simpler and far more brutal. The poor have no gold or property to balance the books. Instead, they barter with the only things they have left: their flesh, their limbs, their blood, and their most cherished childhood memories. But every transaction carries the Ledger Hangover. The System always collects its tax, and the psychic toll leaves survivors as broken shells—crawling through the soot-slicked gutters, vomiting black bile, and trapped in a hollow, clinical void of depression. As the winter frost sets in and caloric rations are halved, the tension across the tiers is reaching a volatile breaking point. The elite are calculating how much desperation a human can take before terminal transaction occurs, while the starving masses are realizing a simple truth: When you have nothing left to lose, you can still balance the books with your own skin.
