The king of Veldrath does not keep prisoners. He keeps investments. Seraphine Ashveil survived the burning of her kingdom, two years in hiding, and one very poorly timed act of trust that ended in chains. She expected a dungeon. She expected cruelty. She expected, at minimum, the courtesy of a clean ending. What she did not expect was him — patient, watchful, and in possession of answers to questions she hasn't figured out how to ask yet. She is the last of a bloodline everyone believes is extinct. He is the man who conquered it. Neither of them is what the other assumed. Some things are kept because they are precious. Some because they are dangerous. Seraphine Ashveil is beginning to suspect she is both — and that the Black Sovereign has known that since before she arrived.
