The world ended in three seconds. Then something stopped it. With every warhead on Earth already in the air, the Lattice froze them mid-sky, switched off every machine more complicated than a sword, and flooded the dead world with magic. Now everyone who turns eighteen is scanned, assigned a class, and enrolled at an Academy to learn what they've become. Eli Brandt has been the "soulless" kid since he was nine. It was a joke. Then the Academy's scan reached in to read his soul, and came back with one word: ERROR. No class. No template. Nothing the system has ever seen — and something it treats like a threat. Because Eli isn't broken, and he isn't empty. He's the first of a class the Lattice worked very hard to erase: a ruler of minds who turns enemies into allies and bends will itself. The only catch is the price. Every time he reaches too far, the thing he burns is the one thing he was always mocked for having too little of. His soul. Turns out the joke was never a joke. It was a warning.
