#This book is a prequel to the main story and serves as the backstory of how the Glass came to be. The storms that drop monsters from the sky keep perfect time. Bryn, a young glasswright of the Counting Orders, is one of the only people alive who can hear it. So when her bells say the next storm comes in ten days and the Church's sacred glass says twenty, she knows exactly what's coming. She just can't make anyone believe her. Not the reeve or the conclave. Not even her brother. When the sky opens over her home village and pours out the goblin-wrong things that get up after they fall, Bryn survives the worst day of her life with a hay-fork and arithmetic—then carries the proof four hundred miles to a capital built to ignore it. The kingdom's answer isn't to fix the clock. It's to tear a hole in the world and summon four strangers. Three of them get legendary weapons. The fourth gets a black slate that won't shine—and a destiny the kingdom will spend the whole series regretting.
