# The Forest Beyond the Hill Everyone in my village knew one rule: never go beyond the hill after sunset. The old people never explained why. They would simply lower their voices and say, “Some doors should remain closed.” I never believed them. One evening, just before the sun disappeared behind the mountains, I grabbed my flashlight and climbed the hill alone. The sky turned dark orange, and a cold wind swept across the grass. At the top of the hill, I saw something I had never noticed before. A narrow path. It led into a forest so dark that it looked like a black wall standing against the fading white sky. My heart told me to go home. My curiosity told me to keep walking. I followed the path. The deeper I went, the quieter everything became. No birds sang. No insects buzzed. Even the wind seemed afraid to enter the forest. My flashlight shook slightly in my hand. After several minutes, I noticed strange marks carved into the trees. They looked old, as if they had been there for hundreds of years. Each symbol pointed deeper into the woods. Then I heard footsteps. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. I spun around. Nothing. Only darkness. “Who’s there?” I whispered. No answer. But the footsteps continued… circling me. I started walking faster. Then running. The forest suddenly changed. The trees became taller, twisted like broken fingers, and the path behind me disappeared completely. My flashlight flickered. And died. Darkness swallowed everything. That’s when I saw it. A pale figure standing between the trees. Not moving. Just watching. Its face was wrong… like it had been stitched together from shadows. I tried to run, but my legs wouldn’t move. The figure stepped closer. And closer. Then it spoke in my voice. “You should have stayed home.” Something hit me from behind. Cold metal. Pain exploded through my chest. I fell to the ground. The forest went silent again. The last thing I saw was the figure kneeling beside me… taking my flashlight… and slowly turning it on. The light didn’t shine forward. It shined backward… into my eyes. And then I realized something horrible. It wasn’t copying my voice. It was learning it. My vision blurred. My body stopped moving. The last thing I heard was my own voice whispering from somewhere in the forest: “Now it’s your turn.” Then everything went dark. --- Some
