Shade is not supposed to exist. In a world where every life is a written Page in the Ledger — a living archive maintained by Archivists, policed by Readers, and corrected by Erasers — Shade has no Page. No recorded birth. No documented past. He is a Blank. An error. A question the system cannot answer. He has spent twenty-six years hiding in a border town, working in a tannery, keeping his head down. The only unusual thing about him is the three voices in his head: Vance, who counts every second with cold precision. Lucian, who narrates his life like an epic poem. And Malin, who shows him truths he would rather not face. Then a Reader touches him by accident. And screams. Shade is not just a Blank. He is unwritten — a man who wrote himself into existence and then erased his own memory. The Archivists want to study him. The Erasers want to delete him. And somewhere, beneath the world, an empty shelf with his name on it is waiting to be filled. Forced to flee with a blank book and a note in his own handwriting — I am writing myself into existence. Do not let them stop me. — Shade must descend into the Undershelf, the library of the dead, to find the truth about who he is. Along the way, he will gather companions erased by the very system that hunts him: a former Archivist who refused to burn a book, and a girl who erased herself because knowing the future was too painful. But the truth waiting in the depths is older and stranger than he imagined. Shade is not the first unwritten being. He is not the first to write himself into the world. And the fire he started twenty-six years ago — in the Last Archive, at the moment of his birth — is still burning. The Ledger is running out of pages. The old world is ending. And Shade must decide: is he the error that breaks the system, or the author of a new one?
