In the vertical abyss of Soot Basin, the mineral in your skin at birth defines your worth. The strong are born to iron and granite, their limbs integrated to hammer the basalt. The elite rule from the soaring Marble Spire with bodies of quartz and volcanic glass. Cole was born to charcoal. Brittle and fragile, his soot-integrated skin is treated as combustible waste by the guards. But Cole has a gift the Spire cannot see: he listens to the stone. Through the soles of his boots, he maps tunnels and hears the shear lines of the mountain before they snap. Now, the Spire's greed has pushed the mines too deep. The faults are crying. When a catastrophic collapse seals Cole in the pitch-black shafts, he is left to die in the suffocating heat. But the dark is not empty. Locked in a silent tomb, Cole catches a frequency that shouldn't exist—a secret buried in the soot that changes everything. To survive, he must follow the resonance pathways of the rock. Because the mountain is screaming, and the softest carbon might just be the most dangerous.
