Yuki Aoshima is very good at pretending. She can pretend to be calm when her feelings are too large for her body. She can pretend to be graceful when every social rule has to be calculated by hand. She can pretend to be grateful when G-Tech—a company that trains and licenses sorcerers to support an overwhelmed police force—sees a beautiful, polished healer before it sees a fighter, a doctor, or a person. But Yuki has never fooled Koyuki. Her lecti, a spirit companion bonded to her magic, is a tiny, glowing, chibi version of herself: bright, impulsive, painfully honest, and much louder about the feelings Yuki has spent years suppressing. Koyuki thinks Yuki should speak up, laugh harder, ask for what she wants, and maybe stop treating every surprise like a disaster. As Yuki enters G-Tech and tries to become the ideal combat healer, memories of childhood, school, martial arts, anime heroines, medical training, and awkward almost-romances reveal how carefully she built the person everyone else sees. But a perfect mask is still a mask. And the person Yuki pretends not to be may be the one she needs most. Perfectly Abnormal is a standalone urban fantasy story about magic, masking, neurodivergence, emotional honesty, and the strange little voice inside that refuses to stay quiet. Written for Royal Road’s “The Person You Pretend to Be” magazine contest. Set in the world of Jett Fulgen, but designed as a complete standalone. No prior knowledge of the main series is needed. What to expect:- A character-focused social drama with eventual romance, set in a sci-fi/fantasy superhero world.- A quieter, more intimate story with limited action and minimal LitRPG/progression elements.- A novella-length fiction with a planned ending.- Neurodivergence and neurodivergent romance treated matter-of-factly, with respect, warmth, and non-mocking humor.- A female lead, workplace/team dynamics, emotional masking, awkward crushes, and a very loud little spirit companion.- No sexual content. New chapters are planned every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday until the story is complete.
