Maeve Vance was never Alden Ashford's assistant. She was his equal — the intuitive half of the most brilliant artificer partnership the High Guild had seen in a generation. Together they built the Grand Engine, a machine designed to power an entire city's etheric grid for a century. When their master died, the Guild gave Alden the patent, the council seat, and the credit. He took all three. Maeve took nothing. She packed her tools and left the Capital without a word. Three years later she runs a small workshop in Tarnstead, two hundred miles and a mountain range from everything she lost. The work is smaller here. The politics are nonexistent. Nobody smiles at her face while stripping her name from her own life's work. It's not everything she wanted. But it's hers. Then the letter arrives. The Grand Engine is failing. The city's etheric grid will collapse within eighteen months without a working prototype by the Solstice Exhibition. Alden has recalculated the load distribution eleven times. His mathematics are flawless. The machine still doesn't work. He's coming to Tarnstead on Thursday. He needs her intuition, her spark, the part of the equation he cannot replicate no matter how many times he runs the numbers. Maeve knows exactly why the engine is failing. She knew three years ago. Her hand is already sketching the solution before she's made any conscious decision at all. She hasn't forgiven him. She isn't sure she can. But the city doesn't care about her feelings. And neither, it turns out, does her own genius. She has conditions. He will agree to all of them. Whether he can actually keep them is another question entirely.
