The Saint in My Novel Refuses His Ending

The Saint in My Novel Refuses His Ending

A convicted murderer who wrote a dark fantasy novel in prison wakes up reincarnated inside it. Lucas Ashford had spent nine years writing "The Blessed One". Just before he could begin the final arc of his novel, he died with his pen frozen mid-sentence in Chapter 404, halfway through a paragraph describing rain over a city that did not exist in reality. He had never believed in goodness. He believed it was the most sophisticated costume a predator could wear. He'd experienced it — a father who wept at church and broke bones at home. A mother who looked away from every bruise, then smiled warmly at the neighbours. So when he built his protagonist, The Saint — Caelum Valerius — he built the ultimate proof of his conviction: "The kindest face in the room is often the one you must never trust." He wrote a villain wearing the face of a saint and made the entire world love him. It was his revenge fantasy against every person who ever chose appearances over truth. The ending existed only in his head, the arc where everything unravels, where Caelum's secrets are unravelled one by one, and where the story he'd constructed as an epitome of his own life finally pays off. He never got to write it.  And then, something the theology of his imaginary world Aethon would call a "waking displacement", and Lucas would have called it, in his dry prison-cell humour, deeply unfair, his soul reincarnated at Chapter 1. The world is running 404 chapters without a conclusion. And slowly, in ways too small to see at first, then too large to ignore, it is beginning to generate its own ending. Pulling events toward a resolution, even if it is not the one Lucas intended. "The world Lucas built to prove that saints are frauds is trying to write an ending where one becomes real." He cannot let Caelum become the hero. Because that would mean the kindest face in the room was actually kind. He cannot let the story end that way. He would rather burn the whole novel down. He is the author. He is the villain's origin. He is the CONDEMNED background character in his own narrative.  He just has to write the ending first. Before the story is written without him.
