When the System arrived and ranked all eight billion humans, Kai Voss got an F. Not the lowest rank. Not the bottom of the hierarchy. According to the fine print nobody else received: Classification Incomplete. Data Anomaly. Do Not Approach With Hostility. Six months later, Kai processes monster carcasses for tokens, gets sarcastic at his own near-death experiences, and has started receiving direct messages from the System itself. Conversational ones. Occasionally apologetic. Turns out the ranking hierarchy — the S-through-F ladder that rebuilt civilisation after The Partition, that decides who matters and who disappears — was built on incomplete information. The original System design had seven variance types, not six. No hierarchy. A spectrum. The implementation corrupted it before it ever went live, and the person who built the corruption has spent seventeen years making sure nobody finds out. The System has been waiting for someone who exists outside its own logic. Someone it can't rank, can't classify, can't predict. Someone who can read the architecture underneath the architecture and change it. It found Kai. He wasn't looking for a revolution. He was looking for anything better than carcass processing. He's going to get both.
