Arcana Falls

Arcana Falls. Population: classified. Fate: negotiable. In an alternate 1950s city where the 22 Major Arcana hold real administrative power — where Justice sits behind a Cipollino marble desk, The Emperor runs the central tower, and The Hierophant decides what the official truth is for the day — a body turns up at the docks at 2am. The victim: Lorne Vael. Unlicensed archivist. The arrangement: all 22 Major Arcana cards laid in a precise outward spiral around the body, placed with the methodical care of someone completing a long project. And at the centre, face down beneath the dead man's hand: a twenty-third card. Blank. Unnumbered. Unclassified. Private investigator Ash Calder — grizzled, streetwise, and operating without an assigned role in a city that assigns everything — is handed the case by Justice herself. Her instructions are precise, clipped, and delivered in eleven sentences. The last three she cannot commit to paper. Contain the matter. What follows is a noir investigation through the streets of Arcana Falls — from the marble corridors of institutional authority to the back alleys of the Margin, the city's unzoned quarter where the unlicensed operators set up shop and the only broadcast tower that asks questions instead of giving answers sends its signal out into the dark. Along the way Calder will interview every Major Arcana in the city — from The Fool perched on a condemned building above the river, to The Magician whose every answer contains a hook, to The Star, a late-night radio broadcaster named Vera Cass whose voice does something he has no professional category for. Because Lorne Vael didn't die to be a mystery. He died to make something irrefutable. And the blank card he left behind is not an anomaly in the system. It's the system's own correction mechanism — built in by the original architects and suppressed three times over. A pressure valve the city forgot it had. A twenty-third position that belongs to no archetype, no role, no authority. Ash Calder pocketed it at the docks before anyone else noticed. He still doesn't know why. He will soon enough. Arcana Falls is a detective noir romantasy set in a fully realised alternate-history city where tarot is infrastructure, every street carries a card's name, and the investigation is never just about the case. It is about what a system does to the people it cannot classify — and what those people do in return.
