Short Review: Chronicles of the Golden Dawn, Book I: Light Never Dies A dark, character-driven fantasy debut This is a collection of interconnected stories set in a grim yet hopeful world. The book follows Alan, a scarred, middle-aged paladin carrying the weight of past failures, and Tobias, his teenage squire who dreams of becoming a knight. Together they face not only monsters and cultists but also the darker sides of human nature: fear, ignorance, corruption, and the cruelty of those in power. The tone is reminiscent of The Witcher — bleak but not hopeless, with moments of warmth, friendship, and quiet courage. The stories vary from horror-tinged adventures (Forsaken Ford) to moral detective work (The Inquirer), social drama (Dead Water), and even philosophical debates between a dwarf inquisitor and a Jaharian mercenary (Gold and Faith). What makes it special: Real, flawed characters (the paladin with a midlife crisis, the squire who learns that justice isn't always legal). A rich, slowly unfolding world — no info dumps, just lived-in details. Themes of memory, choice, and the gray areas between good and evil. A subtle, overarching plot involving a mysterious cult of the Purple Dragon that sets up future books. For fans of: Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher (the short stories), low fantasy with moral complexity, and character-driven narratives. Verdict: A promising debut. Rough edges in translation, but the heart and soul of the story shine through. Recommended for those who like their fantasy dark, thoughtful, and human.
