In a city where the past is kept in ledgers, a single error on a card can close off a person’s future. Lio Veil, a junior clerk of the Archive, borrows a fact to save his sister’s chance at entering the Academy. The Archive does not punish him. It simply files the service: a mark on his skin, a receipt, and a deadline for the first payment. The price is not money. It is memory. Promises. Testimony. The right to be considered reliable. At first, Lio thinks it is a private debt. Then he starts seeing other cases: invalid cards, sold promises, dead witnesses, and people the system saved so neatly that almost nothing of them remained. The Archive is useful. The Archive is legal. The Archive is always right in its wording. Now Lio has to find out whether one can argue with an institution that owns the city’s past.
