"Sorry, boss. We're going independent." For twelve years, Chif raised four opossumfolk as his own — fed them, sheltered them, taught them every con and exploit he knew. On the day they came of age, he meant to bind them to him forever with a single deal they could never break. He taught them too well. Now Ruse, Sterling, Folly, and Ledger are free for the first time in their lives: four siblings with blood on their hands, a god's blessing none of them understand, and nowhere in the world that wants them. Opossumfolk are the swindlers' race. People have learned never to shake their hands. In a world where gods are shaped by human belief and the folk were built to serve them, the siblings want only one thing — a life of their own. A guild called Mer-Field offers a clean start: honest work, a roof, maybe even a family that chose them. But the blessing they carry is a game with a single quest line, and most who play it die. And the deeper they dig into who they really are — and the four test tubes Chif left behind — the clearer it becomes that someone made them on purpose. Whatever made them isn't finished.
