TRIALS OF THE END

TRIALS OF THE END

by Flying Fish

You don’t go to Heaven or Hell when you die unjustly, violently, or with your deepest wants left completely unfulfilled. You wake up in The End. The End is the lowest layer of the Seven Realms—a brutal, decaying wasteland trapped under a permanently cracked sky where the native ecosystem is actively trying to erase you. For the restless dead dragged here, survival is a weekly debt paid in blood through mandatory Weekly Trials. The system doesn't care about your comfort; it forces participants into real, physical domains that test you through visceral Horror, grueling Survival sprints, deceptive Mind Games, or merciless Battle Royales. The severity of your nightmare is dictated by color-coded Trial Stones, ranging from simple Blue to the absolute certainty of Purple Death. Surviving a domain rewards you with stat orbs to increase your physical attributes or your crucial Adaptability. That last stat is everything—if you try to climb the realms to find a way home without high enough Adaptability, your body will literally blow up and turn into a smudge. Knowing how to balance your stats is the ultimate strategy for survival, but the trials are also ruled, meaning the system might strip away your hard-earned abilities just to make the meat-grinder "fair." Enter Nvar. He is a lazy, biting, deeply sarcastic tactician who uses dark humor as a psychological shield. He is a walking contradiction and the ultimate hypocrite: he constantly grumbles that he doesn't want to live, that the world is a lost cause, and that he’d rather just lie down and let the apocalypse take him. Yet, the exact millisecond death snaps at his heels, his mind fires on all cylinders to orchestrate a brilliant, multi-layered escape. He fiercely claims he doesn't care, but he always ends up trying. But Nvar is also a massive glitch in the machinery of the realms. While every other Awakened person receives a Death Recognition—a unique systemic power fundamentally shaped by the specific, traumatic way they died on Earth—Nvar didn't actually die. He has no memory of a death because there wasn't one; he simply went to sleep on Earth and woke up in the End. He has no standard systemic ability. Instead, he arrived with a strange, grim skull necklace that he swears crossed over with him, bypassing the system entirely to bless him with Nine Lives. Because he lacks god-like physical strength or destructive magical spells, he treats the apocalypse like a high-stakes chess game, running mathematical probabilities on the battlefield and weaponizing the low threat profiles of overlooked allies to strike from the blind spots while secretly terrified of what his bizarre existence actually means. As Nvar reverse-engineers the lethal logic loops of the trials, he realizes the most terrifying truth of the Seven Realms: the Weekly Trials aren't the main thing to fear. They are just the waiting room. The true cosmic horror begins when you leave the boundaries and try to climb. Monstrous, massive Disasters roam the land outside the city Safe Zones, and everything is orchestrated by a mysterious, unknown presence referred to only as The Audience. Human civilization, established maps, and safety completely run out at Realm Four. Whatever is waiting in the uncharted realms above is watching, and Nvar is going to have to outsmart reality itself if he ever wants to find out why he was brought here alive.
