Eight years ago, the Arata family was erased in fire. The official report lists seven dead. Ren Arata has always counted seven. So why do the hidden records insist there were eight? Now fifteen, Ren survives in the border districts carrying the only thing untouched by the massacre: a strange twin-bladed sword that should not exist. When the weapon begins reacting to him again, it draws the attention of forces that were supposed to have forgotten his name. Among them is Kaede Kurogane — heir to the family of Control, raised inside the very system that hunted the Arata bloodline into extinction. They were born to become enemies. Instead, they become the first crack in a war neither of them truly understands. Because the conflict between the great families was never about power alone. Creation. Control. Understanding. One of those principles was removed long ago. Since then, the world has been fighting a war it can no longer explain. As erased archives surface and a hidden designation called Haruki begins moving again, Ren, Kaede, and a Seion observer named Aoi uncover the truth behind the massacre: Someone entered the Arata house that night to retrieve something. And whatever was taken may be connected to the missing principle buried inside Ren’s sword. A principle powerful enough to change the balance of the entire system. If the system does not destroy them first.
