It is the year 1719 of the Bell. In the city of Sanct Aurel, power flows through the ancient Bells that tower above the streets and the Ash they produce. The Bellkeepers control both — and the Academy that trains them. Vaelen has spent his life in the slums watching from below. Born with nothing but quick hands and a talent for survival, he has one goal: get inside the Academy, awaken the power he lacks, and claim a place among the Bellkeepers. But the Academy’s walls are not built for boys like him. To cross them, he will have to lie, steal, and do things the slums never prepared him for — and survive the things the Academy doesn’t teach.
