In Dunmere, poverty is ordinary, and awakenings are rare. Seventeen-year-old orphan Cael Vey expects to spend his life cutting timber for men stronger than him. As beasts gather, old powers move, and war closes around the frontier, Cael is forced into a brutal climb through a world where rank determines worth but advancement takes its toll.
