Valerie isn't human. Not anymore; maybe not ever. Built in a lab, shaped into something that doesn't have a name yet, she spent eight years hiding on Earth under borrowed identities, keeping a list she wishes she could stop adding to, and holding herself back inside every room she walked into. Now she's on the other side of a cosmic gate. New planet. New sky. New rules or no rules at all, which is almost the same thing. All she wants is a quiet life. A small farm. A reason to stop running. What she gets instead is a dead god, a city full of people who want answers, an old friend who's become something she doesn't recognize, and a world that seems to have been waiting for someone exactly her size. She promised herself she was done being a weapon. The planet hasn't heard that yet.
