THE RABBIT ROBOT Middle Grade Science Fiction | 40,000 words A3S0P1 — known as Aesop — is the last robot ever born, awakening in Machineland to watch the sunrise with Machine Mother. From their first moments, Aesop is different: curious, restless, and stirred by something the other machines cannot name. They are immediately drawn to Pari, a hummingbird robot who serves as Machineland's Librarian — quick, brilliant, and mysteriously attractive to Aesop. Machine Mother reveals the stakes: the Machine Leaders have decided robot civilization has no reason to continue, and plan to put all machines into a permanent Deep Freeze. Aesop has been tasked with finding a reason for robot society to go on — but there is a crueler truth underneath. The Machine Leaders created Aesop to fail. They are meant to be proof that there is no hope, a final justification for ending everything. Aesop refuses the script. They escape Machineland despite the Machine Leaders' attempts to shut them down immediately, and set out across a vast, rewilded Gaia to find what robot civilization might be worth saving. The journey is not easy. A fearsome Grizzlybot attacks Aesop and tears off their arm — along with all of their pain receptors. Rather than weakening Aesop, the loss becomes a strange gift: forced to feel the world differently, they begin to truly pay attention. A quiet sage-like figure known as the Fabric Rabbit, who believes they are not a robot, teaches Aesop to still their mind — a practice Aesop will come to call Unscripting.  Later in Aesop's travels they encounter a remote village of robots who have outlived their original purposes, but repair themselves using natural materials and ingenuity. Aesop admires their resilience and, in turn, discovers that a quiet mind can open the door to something even more surprising: dreams. Aesop begins to teach Unscripting, though the robots are skeptical. Gradually, their dreams open the doors to playing music, and unscripting reveals how to find meaning beyond their programmed function. Aesop confronts the Grizzlybot and learns the reason behind their rage — the robot had faithfully completed its missions, then been abandoned and forgotten by the Machine Leaders. Its grief was never cruelty, but neglect. Aesop makes peace with the Grizzlybot and recovers their arm. The Grizzlybot, moved by being truly seen for the first time, joins Aesop's growing community of robots committed to returning to Machineland together to stop the Deep Freeze. Back in Machineland, the Machine Leaders move to detain Aesop — but Pari, rescues them. In a climactic moment, the Grizzlybot's strength and Aesop's courage combine to bring down the Machine Leaders and stop the Deep Freeze.  Robot civilization does not end. It begins again — rebuilt on authenticity, emotion, and the radical idea that feeling things is not a malfunction. It is the whole point.
