Ceddrick Scaleheart has been kicked out of fourteen adventuring parties. The reasons are always different, a bandit leader permanently polymorphed into a sheep, a mispronounced charm leading to a very talkative alpaca, a backfired spell whose results are best not mentioned here, the result is always the same. Another group he can’t rejoin and another town he can’t go back to. He is, by all accounts, the worst mage in the kingdom. When he chose to lay low in Moss Haven, a quaint town at the end of an unkempt road, his plan is simple. Drink away the shame, lie low and wait for his latest failure to pass. He manages the first, he always manages the first. The other two fall apart on the first night, when after several ales, he overhears a table of locals discussing a string of suspicious deaths in town. Four dead, the guards stumped, fear and anxiety taking over the townsfolk. Ceddrick, with all the courage of five or six too many ales and nothing else to lose, announces he will solve it. He wakes the next morning with crusted soup in his beard and two town guards holding him to his word.
