Malaise is a hard sci-fi psychological horror, exploring themes of madness and grief, and how the human mind copes when faced with the unknown. It follows the crew of the NASF Tokyo, a starship on a mission from the Nova Federation to explore a region of space known as the Dark Expanse. To summarise, a planet called Malaise is found. It is a woeful planet of lead and mercury, and a raging endless storm which slowly debilitates the crew members. After the unexpected death of a crew member, the mental health of the crew spirals downwards, leading to worse and worse atrocities.
