In the Valdrian Empire, writing is a death sentence. For three hundred years, the immortal Archon has ruled from his Crystalline Throne, his Censor Order burning every book, every scroll, every scrap of text—because writing is how the old magic worked, and the Archon will share power with no one. Sera Ashveil burns books for a living. She's good at it. She never lets herself read the pages before they curl to ash. Except once. The fragment she finds tucked inside a condemned merchant's ledger is unlike anything she's seen: ancient script that seems to rearrange itself when she blinks, that whispers in a language she has never been taught but somehow already knows. She should hand it to her supervisor. She should let it burn. She doesn't. That single act of keeping makes Sera the most wanted person in the empire—because the fragment is a piece of the Iron Codex, the mythical book written by the First Scribe at the dawn of the world. A book containing the complete grammar of creation: every Word of power that has ever existed or ever could. With it, one could unmake mountains, raise the dead, rewrite the laws of nature itself. The Archon wants it. He has wanted it for three centuries, and he is very, very patient. Now Sera is running with a disgraced former Censor captain, a blind elder who has memorized a thousand forbidden texts, a warrior whose body is covered in illegal ink, a street child who should never have gotten involved, and a fragment of the most dangerous book ever written—across a continent that wants her dead, toward a temple that may not exist, with the Archon's hunter three steps behind. But the deeper she reads, the more Sera begins to understand: the Iron Codex is not a weapon. It is a reckoning. And the most important Word it contains is one the Archon has spent three hundred years trying to unlearn. His own name.
