On the world of Zorvákhar, survival is not a promise — it is a doctrine. Raised within the stone walls of Velkharûn Veštael, four orphaned children learn to endure under the teachings of the Khai-Metef and the guiding faith of the Celestial Cluster. Among them are Kai, a Miāwren-Khet; Sery, a Ryûkhariel with the rare ability to hear the spirits of living things; and two Varkhâlen children, Rov and Lira. All four are Tharûn-Vael — marked mongrels, mixed-blood children considered uneven in a society that values lineage above all else. Within the orphanage, they are treated equally and taught that endurance is strength. But equality does not mean safety. When a mysterious blade is discovered in the forest, it carries a presence of malice that only Sery can sense. Something foreign has entered their land. Something watching.
