Vittoria Ralland is a protective, emotionally disciplined war-forged woman whose greatest strength is not violence, but her refusal to let brutality decide what kind of person she is. On a planet with a young blue sun, a theocrat rules eight militarized territories through ritualized war. The territories are named after old crusaders rumored to have harnessed the sun with a device that granted them control over every machine built by man. Vittoria “Tori” Ralland scavenges for her village while her older half-sister Lisbet, last of an immortal race, raids the state army in secret. When a machine-angel takes Lisbet, Tori and her brother Lu are conscripted into the same force that stole their sister from them. They are given the Blur, a combat network that sharpens reality into color-coded instinct. It makes them faster, stronger, less human with every engagement. The army erases a resistance it first provoked, prompting Tori and Lu begin to sabotage the cruel army from within. The conflict escalates, and Tori and Lu fight into the capital dressed as the very army they undermine, moving through a system that no longer distinguishes soldier from weapon. Lisbet awaits them in the capital, but nothing about the city feels right, and whatever trap they have walked into has already been set in motion long before they arrived.
