In a remote mountain village hidden deep in Southwest China, Lin Chaoyang grew up learning medicine from his grandfather. He learned how to identify herbs before he learned algebra. He followed old mountain trails, memorized ancient medical texts, and watched dying people return from the edge of death beneath thirteen dark silver needles no modern hospital could explain. The village itself was strange. Outsiders rarely found the road into Mao’er Ridge twice. Old men spoke in half-finished sentences. Some names were never mentioned after dark. At eighteen, Lin Chaoyang leaves the mountains for the first time to attend medical school in the city. He expects modern life to make the old stories disappear. Instead, the farther he walks into the modern world, the more he realizes something is following him out of the mountains. And some things were never meant to leave Mao’er Ridge.
