by Yukino Kagonome
The Sole Survivor Kagome Yukino Deep in the mountains of Mie Prefecture lies a pond that should never have been found. Three friends set out for a remote hiking spot deep in the forest. It was a place locals warned about only in whispers. An old sign at the trailhead read, “Only one survivor has ever been recorded.” They thought it was a joke. It wasn’t. What began as a casual summer hike quickly turned to terror as the forest fell unnaturally silent, the air grew heavy with an invisible pressure, and something ancient began to breathe in perfect sync with their own stress. One by one, with terrifying precision, the group began to disappear. Only one would return alive. But even the most precious things come at a price. Now, back in their hotel room, the last survivor watches as their reflection in the mirror begins to move just a fraction of a second ahead of them. And deep within those eyes, they see the figure of Pool, lying in wait. A chilling horror story that explores what remains after everything has been forgotten. Only one survivor has been recorded. Welcome to the exception.
