Ashes of tomorrow

Ashes of tomorrow

by Michael Colb

A fast-spreading virus breaks out across the world and changes everything in a matter of days. The virus spreads through bites, and anyone who gets infected turns into a violent monster shortly after. Governments lose control, cities collapse, and communication stops. The world quickly becomes filled with ruins, danger, and infected creatures roaming freely. In the middle of this collapse, a group of high school students from the same school survives the first wave of the outbreak. They are thrown together by chance during the chaos and forced to stay together in order to survive. None of them are trained for this kind of situation, and they all react differently to fear and danger. With no safe place left and no real help coming, they begin moving through broken cities, empty roads, and destroyed buildings, always trying to stay one step ahead of the infected. At the center of the group is a quiet teenage boy who does not stand out in normal life. He rarely speaks, avoids attention, and keeps his thoughts to himself. However, in the new world, his calm thinking and ability to observe situations clearly make him an important part of the group’s survival. He does not lead officially, and there is no fixed leader among them. Instead, decisions are made in the moment, often depending on who can handle the situation best at that time. As they travel, the group faces constant danger not only from monsters but also from the pressure of survival itself. Food becomes scarce, safe places disappear, and fear begins to change how they treat each other. Arguments, misunderstandings, and panic slowly weaken their trust. Some want strict control, others rely on instinct, and some struggle just to keep going. Over time, the journey becomes more than just escaping monsters. It becomes about how long a group of ordinary teenagers can hold on to their humanity in a world that is falling apart, and whether survival will bring them closer together or slowly tear them apart.
