Faultline

It's 1943. Jay Greene has been grieving his mother quietly for a year — so quietly that no one's noticed, including himself. Then the Moores move in next door and his father sends him over to complain. He meets Ander instead. Ander, who has been neglected so completely and for so long that he's made a kind of peace with it. They become something to each other that neither of them quite understand. The summer fills up slowly — a gas station, a girl named Ruth, rooftop conversations, a slow dance in a living room when for one moment the war feels like it might actually end. And underneath all of it, a clock ticking. Trees getting marked for removal all over the neighborhood. A gold star under Jay's bed that he's not ready to put in the window. This is not a story that says love is enough. Jay is not a villain. He's a boy drowning in his own invisible grief, and he can't see that the person next to him is too. The fault isn't blame. Fault is pressure. Pressure that builds until something finally gives.
