Nico Venturi is twenty-two, behind on a deadline, and in love with his best friend in a way he is careful not to put into sentences. When Abby asks him to fill in for a fifty-dollar psych study at the university—easy, just answer some questions—he says yes because she asked. The study is in a basement that isn’t on the building plans. The waiver mentions unforeseen perceptual effects. The room is steel, the door locks from the outside, and by the time Nico understands what he has signed, his body is on the floor and what’s left of him is trying not to come apart in the vents. Abby learns that Nico has been found dead on a trail he would never have hiked. She doesn’t believe it. What she finds instead is a leased basement that shouldn’t exist, a physicist tracking signals he can’t explain, and a program already moving to erase the people who know where to look. Nico is still here. Not in any form she would recognize. What he can do now obeys rules, and the rules cost him. Spread too far and his thoughts thin out. Gather enough to think clearly and the world narrows to a pinprick. He has weeks to learn what he is before the program comes back for him—and Abby is already walking into reach.
