Children of the Sun is a fantasy dystopia set in a world of people living in the middle atmosphere of a gas giant planet, using hot air to create floating structures of ice and crystal to live in. In the past, great floating sky whales produced the hot gas in their bodies, but were hunted to extinction to preserve the society. But a secret race of people, the Nebae, have the same power. Specialized organs throughout their skin allows them to heat up or cool down the surrounding air through chemical reactions, but damages them in the process. Though they were once celebrated for their magic, they are now kept hidden and imprisoned by governments and used as soldiers, until they are no longer useful. The story follows a little girl, Lei, as she uncovers the secrets of her world and her hatred for them, and Sao, a Nebae boy growing up in the Reik, a prison in both of their's nation.
