Iron Strider

Iron Strider

by Yhette

ActionAdventureComedyFantasyGameLit

After an accident leaves him with a damaged leg and a surplus of unresolved anger, Lewis wakes to find himself no longer in his own world, but processed into another one — a place governed by assessments, clipboards, and officials who treat reality like a poorly indexed filing system. Lewis is not alone. Alice, sharper and more adaptable, navigates the new environment with wary competence. Around them are other displaced beings — some human, some not — all quietly funnelled through a bureaucratic intake process that insists they are human-adjacent and therefore eligible for evaluation. The rules are not explained so much as implied, and any attempt to question them is efficiently ignored. The assessment quickly escalates from administrative inconvenience to something far more dangerous. Lewis is separated from Alice and assigned to a survival trial alongside a group of strangers who default to hierarchy, exclusion, and the comforting fiction that cruelty is leadership. When the group is attacked by predatory chimera-like creatures, Lewis survives not through strength or heroism, but through accident, instinct — and the intervention of one of the creatures itself. The chimera, later named Kai, does not behave as expected. Instead of attacking, it chooses Lewis. This single deviation exposes a flaw in the assessment’s assumptions and marks Lewis as a liability. While the rest of the group scrambles to reassert control, Lewis forms an uneasy partnership with Kai — one built on mutual wariness, shared isolation, and the practical understanding that neither fits the system’s definitions. Cast out by the group’s self-appointed leader, Lewis and Kai retreat into the surrounding wilderness. There, survival becomes quieter, stranger, and more deliberate. They scavenge. They build. Lewis begins to reshape his environment — and himself — discovering that the world responds to intent as much as effort. Time itself becomes unreliable, marked by an embedded clock that refuses to behave properly and suggests the assessment is being monitored far more closely than advertised. Meanwhile, fragments of the wider system intrude: crystalline cards that catalogue threats, officials whose paperwork doesn’t quite add up, and hints that Lewis’s continued existence is causing administrative discomfort elsewhere. When members of the original group splinter and attempt to escape their own leadership, Lewis is confronted with a choice — repeat the violence that defined his old life, or decide what kind of power he is willing to wield. He chooses restraint. Not out of mercy, but out of clarity. As the assessment continues to close in, it becomes clear that Lewis is no longer merely being evaluated — he is being misfiled. The system does not know what to do with someone who survives without playing along, who forms alliances it cannot classify, and who refuses both submission and spectacle. The story closes with Lewis and Kai established beyond the assessment’s neat boundaries, watched but unresolved — a living anomaly in a world that relies on categories to function. The question is no longer whether Lewis will pass the assessment, but whether the assessment can survive encountering him.
